Pennebaker shot Bob Dylan in the alley next to the Savoy Hotel in London for his 1965 documentary Don't Look Back, he didnt know hed essentially created one of the first music videos, one whose influence would span decades and inspire tributes and parodies. Pennebaker recalled shooting this iconic Dylan moment in this interview from 2017. Its at Newcastle steel works. Its no longer there, its been shut down. And then we went to theIt was only later when I was looking atwas coming to tell us to piss off, it just happened. And Weird Al Yankovic Neuwirth were waiting for me. And the firstback where there was nobody there in thethe first cut of the film that I thought to put itall those trucks just started going, and it was just like thing he said was I have this idea of writingalleyway. And then the alleyway was20in. The way the film started when I first didmagic. And we didnt have [a video monitor], so I wasBobout the lines of a song and holding a lot ofyears later, it looks exactly the same. I didntthe rough cut, hes standing in the dressingjust standing at the camera, and we were just rolling, them as the song goes. And I said its aeven set up much. I just did it handheld. Weroom, I think, he sayshes sort of doingand just rolled the song and still, at the end, I could terrific idea and so we carried, oh god, lotsjust did one take. We hadI had an Nagrathe words to the song and as he standssee as we filmed it that John Farris fucked it upofwe got a whole bunch of shirttape player there and I played the tape whichthere, he says, You start off standing. Andeverything was brilliant, and everyone was brilliant, cardboards, I think, that we took with us tohed given me earlier. I played it and he I thought thats a good way to start, whicheveryone stood where they had to go and then we got England. you know, he sort of did it as it played.
