Remembering The Late Heavy D: “He Gave 110% All The Time,” Recalls Director Drew Carolan
Jamaican-born Dwight Arrington Myers, better known as Heavy D of the hip-hop group Heavy D and the Boyz, passed away yesterday at the age of 44. His honored place in the hip-hop community is well documented, as is his presence within THE GOLDEN AGE OF MUSIC VIDEO, looming large in stature and on screen in everything from his own “Nuttin’ But Love” video to the clip for Janet Jackson’s “Alright” remix. In response to this tragic loss to the music world, we offer the following comment from Drew Carolan, who directed two of the most popular videos for the self-proclaimed “Overweight Lover”.
“Heavy D had a loving quality that transcended his entertainment persona. What you saw was what you got. He was loyal to his friends and fans alike. He would always ask me how my family was and that made me feel really good.”
“We made ‘Now That We Found Love’ and ‘Is It Good To You’ over the course of five days in New York City, and it was hard work. He gave 110 % all the time. Heavy was a great collaborator and was always open to ideas that were presented to him. Heavy treated everyone on the set with love and respect, and that made people want to work twice as hard. It’s a sad day indeed, and I’m honored to have worked with such a talented artist.”
R.I.P. the overweight lover Heavy D. We’ve got nuttin’ but love for ya, baby.
